On this day, 13 Bashans, we commemorate the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, an event that has been a cornerstone of our faith since the early days of Christianity. As St. Luke writes in Acts 1:9, 'And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.'
The Ascension is a testament to the glory of God, a demonstration of the power and majesty that our Lord exhibited during His earthly ministry. It is a reminder that Christ's work on earth was not limited to His crucifixion and resurrection, but extended to His return to the Father, where He now intercedes on our behalf.
In the Coptic Orthodox tradition, the Ascension is seen as a celebration of the unity of the Godhead, a manifestation of the love and harmony that exists between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As we chant in our hymns, 'He ascended to the heavens, and sat down at the right hand of the Father, as one of the Holy Trinity.'
The Ascension also holds profound implications for our understanding of salvation. As our Lord ascended to the Father, He took our humanity with Him, demonstrating that we, too, can participate in the divine life. As St. Paul writes in Romans 6:4, 'Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.'
As we celebrate the Ascension, we are reminded of the importance of living a life that reflects our heavenly citizenship. We are called to strive for holiness, to seek the things that are above, and to set our minds on the heavenly realm, where Christ sits at the right hand of the Father.
In the words of Pope Shenouda III, 'The Ascension of Christ is a call to us to ascend with Him, to rise above the earthly things and to seek the heavenly things.' May we heed this call, and may our lives be a witness to the glory of God, as we strive to follow in the footsteps of our ascended Lord.
May the blessing of the Ascended Lord be upon us, and may His glory shine in our hearts, now and forever.
